Client The Falstaff Hotel and Bar

Format A4 bi-folded 32-page menu, custom size menus and posters

Skills InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, art working and typesetting

The Falstaff Hotel and Bar in Canterbury contracted me to redesign their bar menu. I chose a new serif font for the main copy to ensure that the text was legible and introduced a consistent size and styling throughout the menu.

I was also asked to design menus, posters and other promotional items for their themed menus.

Cocktail Chemistry was a menu based around the science of mixology. The client wanted a menu that looked like an science text book, along with a poster based upon the periodic table. The 24-page menu functions as mini-book, containing information about the cocktails and the scientific facts behind their creation.

Cocktail Monopoly was a cocktail menu based upon the classic board game, with drinks inspired by the locations. I designed a menu with some copy-right free artwork, which also doubled as an actual game board. I also designed a larger poster size version of the board, for display outside the hotel.

Another themed menu featured cocktails based on the music of a famous pop singer. I designed the menu and poster to look like an old vinyl record sleeve.

I designed a range of marketing materials for Kent Sport at the University of Kent. This included a brochure and flyers to promote their revamped sports facilities. They also asked me to design materials for two other events. One was the opening of their new cafe. I designed a leaflet, menu, a vinyl poster and social media banners. The other event was their ‘Sporting Legends’ celebration. I designed a flyer, two brochures, an invitation, exhibition boards and graphics for a carrier bag.

They first contracted me to design the brochure, required in time for the start of the new term. It needed to adhere to their corporate design guidelines.

The brochure contains different sections for students, staff, alumni and the public. Each section has the relevant information and membership options for these readers. I colour-coded each section to make this clearer. For the photography, I chose to use one strong ‘hero’ image per page, rather than several smaller images. This was to stop the pages looking too cluttered. I converted the images to black and white, to make the brochure look more sophisticated. The heading and text overlap with the images to create some interest.

I expanded this design across the other materials, using the same black and white photography and colour treatment for the text.
